Aurora Hills Senior Program
The Aurora Hills Senior Program has been designated for closure in the County Manager's 2011 Proposed Budget. See the Arlington County 2011 Main Budget Page. Also see the Manager's Proposed Budget Released February 20, 2010
Departmental Reductions. This includes the proposed Aurora Hills Senior
Program cut (under PRCR) and the Library cut (under Libraries)
The Aurora Hills Senior Program serves 75-100 seniors a day and operates at full capacity, at a cost that is commensurate with other senior programs on a per-senior, per-day basis.
The Aurora Hills Senior Program costs about $2.75 per senior, per day to operate. By comparison the cost for transportation to another senior center would be $5.00 per senior per day.
The budget proposal to close the Aurora Hills Senior Program will save only $30,760 out of an overall Senior Program budget of $1.28M, less than 2.5% of the total. See Arlington County Senior Programs Financial Information. The small savings is outweighed by the huge impact of closing the program.
The Senior Program is the only remaining county-funded program at Aurora Hills, serving the Crystal City, Pentagon City, Aurora Highlands and Arlington Ridge communities, in a pedestrian-friendly, metro-friendly neighborhood location.
The Aurora Hills Facility is the only community facility in the 22202 zip code (bounded by I-395, Four Mile Run and the Potomac River), which has a population of 18,000 (2008 est), of which 15% are 65 yr or older (2000 census).
The Aurora Hills Facility was developed as part of the Pentagon City Phased Development Site Plan (PDSP), and included a community center, library and fire station. The PDSP also included a senior apartment housing complex, a nursing home, and the Southampton townhouses --a carefully planned group of assets within walking distance.
The Aurora Hills Senior Program has the support of our entire community and friends across the county.

We are developing a proposal to grow the community center via a public-private partnership and have initiated discussions with County staff. Dream with us on what the Aurora Hills Community Center could be. We need your help! The Community Neighborhood Workshop. Contact Miriam Gennari to assist with this important cause.
We ask that County Board consider restoring the Aurora Hills Senior Program funding of $30,760 via equitable cuts across the overall $1.28M Senior Programs budget.
